Virilogarl
Male impotence (erectile dysfunction) is a serious clinical problem since it is widespread, affecting about 10-20 million men in
the United States alone, and perhaps most importantly, because it can foreshadow cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction
or stroke) or diabetes mellitus. An analysis of more than 400 published studies has revealed that erectile dysfunction occurs in
about 52% of men 40 to 70 years old and in a higher percentage of men over 70 years of age. Impotence has an intricate
physiopathological basis in that it can be caused not only by ageing, but also by atherosclerosis, hypertension, stroke, diabetes
mellitus, alcoholism, depression and other neurologic/psychologic disorders, chronic illnesses, various drugs, heavy cigarette
smoking, major surgery, radiation therapy, kidney failure, benign prostatic hyperplasia, hypogonadism, multiple sclerosis and
certain forms of epilepsy. Among the drugs that have been associated with impotence are: diuretics, â-blockers, antidepressants,
anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic drugs, heroin, cocaine, anti-ulcer drugs, certain hormonal preparations (e.g., those that block the
effects of testosterone), and chemotherapeutic agents.
The conceptualization of Virilogarl stemmed from findings which indicated that atherosclerosis is a primary cause of impotence
in nearly half of the men afflicted who are over the age of fifty, and is based on the supposition that advancing atherosclerosis
and the consequent decreased efficiency of the NO system of penile blood vessels contribute in a causal manner to most cases
of male sexual impotence. As atherosclerosis is involved, the endothelial NO/c-GMP system must also be involved, since both
the activity of endothelial NO synthase (which catalyzes the formation of NO from L-arginine in vascular endothelial cells) and
the release of NO from endothelial cells are markedly reduced in atherosclerotic blood vessels. As it is now known that many
different plant extracts can enhance NO-mediated vasodilatation, Virilogarl was designed to contain several of these extracts as
well as the NO-precursor L-arginine. As impotence can be related to a deficient NO/c-GMP system in both vascular
endothelial cells and in the nerves that mediate relaxation of smooth muscle cells of corpus cavernosum, this combined dietary
supplement provides a method for increasing the production of NO at both of these anatomical sites (i.e., an attack at the level
of the "root cause" of the problem).
The major ingredients of Virilogarl are Ginkgo leaf extract, garlic extract and L-arginine. Ginkgo extract enhances NO
synthesis and release, produces endothelium-dependent vasodilatation and inhibits platelet aggregation, has antioxidant,
anti-ischaemic, anti-inflammatory, and rheological properties, and can increase blood flow and oppose peripheral neuropathy.
Garlic extract enhances NO synthesis and release, produces endothelium-dependent vasodilatation, inhibits platelet aggregation,
has antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic properties, and contains a high concentration of the NO-precursor, L-arginine.
L-Arginine is a direct precursor to NO. Other ingredients of Virilogarl are: bilberry extract, grape seed extract and green tea leaf
extract, all of which enhance NO-mediated mechanisms of vasodilatation and possess antioxidant activity.
The novelty of Virilogarl is that it contains five distinct plant extracts, all of which have been shown to enhance NO-mediated
endothelium-dependent vasodilatation, as well as L-arginine, a precursor for NO synthesis. This combination of ingredients
provides a dietary supplement with activity that differs from that of any known conventional or herbal remedy with respect to
its combined molecular mechanisms of action. All of the components of Virilogarl, via enhancing the function of the NO/c-GMP
system, contribute to enhanced vasodilatation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and improvement of blood flow, all of which
are considered useful in preventing or delaying the onset or progression of male impotence. As an example of
complementarity of action, Ginkgo extract enhances NO-dependent vasodilatation via the actions of its proanthocyanidin
constituents, whereas L-arginine enhances NO-dependent vasodilatation by serving as a precursor to NO.
The major use for Virilogarl is prevention and treatment of male impotence (erectile dysfunction), a
pathological state that is caused by insufficient blood supply to penile blood vessels as a result of advancing
atherosclerosis and/or peripheral neuropathy and which is associated with decreases in the production and release of NO (an
endogenous vasodilator and platelet-inhibitor). Virilogarl should not be expected to produce results over the short term. It may
take weeks or months to exert its effects.
