The major active ingredients of Immunogarl-1 were selected with the view that they would act in a complemen-
tary manner with one another (i.e., that they would mutually support each other's health-promoting actions). These
essential ingredients are: garlic extract, Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, and an enzyme preparation containing amylase,
protease and lipase. The garlic ingredient possesses immunostimulant, antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-infective,
anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, and also serves as a digestive aid by increasing nutrient absorption
from the GI tract. Garlic has also been shown to inhibit the formation of procarcinogenic nitrosamines that are
formed during digestion, and to increase white blood cell counts in human geriatric patients. The Ginkgo
ingredient possesses antioxidant activity, inhibits MAO activity, has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer
properties, enhances the action of vitamin C, and has been used to treat age-related cardiovascular problems and
disturbances in cognitive function. The enzyme preparation (derived from Aspergillus), contains enzymes that
enhance the digestion and absorption of food, thereby surmounting the insufficient secretion of digestive enzymes
that occurs during normal ageing and which leads to incomplete digestion of proteins and decreased nutrient
absorption from the GI tract.
The other ingredients of Immunogarl-1 are: Grifola frondosa ("maitake" mushroom) extract, ascorbic acid (vita-
min C) and L-glutamine. The maitake "D-fraction" contains polysaccharide constituents that have powerful
immune-enhancing and anti-cancer properties, and it is active against AIDS infections. Ascorbic acid is a potent
antioxidant with immunostimulant and anti-cancer properties, and it is a nitrite-scavenger in the stomach where
procarcinogenic nitrosamines can be formed. L-Glutamine is used since it is the preferred energy source of cells
that line the GI tract and since it contributes to the immunologic integrity of the GI tract by promoting lymphocyte
proliferation and by serving as a precursor to the potent antioxidant glutathione.
The novelty of Immunogarl-1 is based on a unique combination of garlic extract, Ginkgo extract, an enzyme prepa-
ration and several additional ingredients. These ingredients possess various molecular mechanisms of action
which complement one another to provide immunostimulant and anti-ageing effects that differ from those of other
conventional or herbal remedies.. As an example of such complementary activities, the antioxidant action of gar-
lic extract depends mainly upon its thiosulfinate constituents (e.g., allicin) which act by increasing the
activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes (e.g., catalase and glutathione peroxidase), whereas the antioxidant
activity of the Ginkgo component depends upon its flavonoid constituents (e.g., proanthocyanidins) which act by
scavenging free radicals and related ROS and by decreasing the activities of certain enzymes that are involved in
the formation of free radicals (e.g., MAO). Another example of such complementarity relates to counteracting the
decrease in nutrient absorption from the GI tract that can occur during normal ageing or in immunocompromised
subjects. In this case, the garlic ingredient enhances digestion and nutrient absorption via increasing the secretion
of hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes into the gastric juice and by stimulating movement of the intestinal
villi, whereas the enzyme preparation acts by replacing some of the enzymatic activity that is required for
digestion, and the L-glutamine ingredient acts via providing energy to cells of the GI tract.
Major uses for Immunogarl-1 include prevention or delaying the onset or progression of a variety of
conditions associated with compromised function of the immune system, e.g., various bacterial, viral, fungal,
protozoal, and parasitic infections, various forms of cancer, AIDS, and various age-related chronic disorders,
including neurologic/psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
