The most recent research on spirulina comes from Cuba, where a group of researchers have found that one of spirulina's pigments, phycocyanin, possesses anti-inflammatory properties similar to some non-steroidal anti -inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Considering the dangers linked to NSAIDs, particularly ulcers, spirulina should be viewed as an essential component of any arthritis program. No other green superfood contains this pigment. Recently, the first human study on spirulina's cancer-preventive effects was conducted in Kerala, India, where access to fresh produce is limited. The study involved 60 tobacco chewers suffering from oral leukoplakia. After taking one gram of spirulina day for one year, 45% of patients experienced a complete regression of lesions, compared to just 7% of the patients in the placebo group. Within one year of discontinuing treatment, 45% of the spirulina group experienced a recurrence of lesions. Spirulina can protect white blood cells from damage caused by radiation and chemotherapy and improve recovery time. In Tokyo, doctors have been able to halt the progression of cataracts by adding 20 to 30 grams of spirulina to the patients medications. In a few cases, the cataracts cleared completely. Dr. Tomokichi Sakai, an internist at the University of Eastern Japan, has used spirulina to cure ulcers and liver congestion. Other Japanese researchers have shown it to protect against mercury and drug-induced kidney failure making it particulary helpful for people suffering the effects of mercury-laden fillings
