Omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid) and omega 6 (linoleic acid) essential fatty acids are vital components of cell membranes, hormones, and nerve cells, and essential fatty acid deficiencies are implicated in many degenerative diseases. They can affect the body's immune system, inflammatory response, blood flow, blood pressure and coagulability or "thickness" of the blood. Omega 3 fatty acids also can have a marked effect on reducing triglyceride levels. Researchers at the University of Oregon found that 10 patients with markedly higher triglyceride levels experience a drop in triglycerides from 1,353 to 281, and a corresponding drop in their cholesterol level from 373 to 207 in only four weeks on a diet high in essential fatty acids (Omega 3). The flax plant is an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Johanna Budwig, a german biochemist and expert on fats and oils, says that the absence of essential fatty acids in the average western diet is responsible for the production of onydase, which induces cancer growth and is the cause of many other chronic disorders. Dr. Budwig uses 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil mixed with 1/2 cup cottage cheese three times a day for the treatment of cancer.
